I would give it a second chance

View at the pool, the staff was kind and helpful

Beautiful views and location. Super helpful staff

Beautiful location with fabulous views. Lovely pool, quiet and relaxing. The hotel is really good value for money and was very clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay again.

It has recently been taken over by new management and so there are some teething problems but nothing that impacted on our enjoyment.

Unusual and enjoyable.

location. value and we do quirky. after I cleared the leaves the pool was good. Great restaurant 300 metres and good walks from Monchique and Foia.

In short, the price is a bit high with a very poor breakfast

The view is great and room is spacious Bonus is the walking distance to a very good restaurant, it can be handy for some glasses of wine

Breakfast is very basic... coffee is not very drinkable...

Estalagem Abrigo de Montanha, Monchique

The hotel is quaint and has real charm. It was spotlessly clean and breakfast was first class. The room was spacious with great views. Complementary tea and coffee, a roaring fire at night and multi channel TV in the resident's lounge, as well as TV with local channels in the bedroom. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel is a bit outside the town of Monchique if you don't have a car and it isn't on a bus route. The restaurant was not open at night but there are excellent restaurants in walking distance.

Awful

The view and the location.

Where to start? The bathroom was dirty including thick dust on the wall heater and rust coming through the bath enamel. the bed sheets were old, stained and had holes in them. The blankets were very old, worn thin and were frayed around the edges. The advertised bar was closed and the restaurant used for breakfast only, it had fire fighting equipment missing and some of the chairs were held together with electric wire. Breakfast was poor. This hotel appeared to have once been smart, comfortable and stylish with good facilities and gardens. Now it is run down and poorly maintained, especially the bedrooms.

Fantastic view from the private balcony.

Fantastic view from the private balcony. Great bathroom with full size bath, endless hot water, powerful shower, foot bath. Bedroom was big and comfortable as was the bed. Large fridge/freezer. Plenty of cupboard/wardrobe space. Crazy low price for the view alone.

Breakfast was a bit basic but at the price not a problem.

The pool but needs renovation. As advertised it’s the highlight.

Sound of squeaky rusty bed springs! This place has its merits. We both agreed the views are spectacular and the pool area not so bad apart from a couple of loungers with folding bars broken. We questioned if the rest of it was. We were given a double bed when we expected 2 single beds, given the reason of being full. Now taken further from our expectations to the other side of the building that required climbing, an exaggeration I know, a thousand steps! The room itself was not so bad clean floors, but the balcony not swept along with the stairs. It was the sound of squeaky rusty bed springs crunching away. We could not sleep, the bed old. It’s springs worn with time, rustic to the turn tune. The bathroom had no light and the shower holder broken! It was not good! The accommodation reception lady was lovely and worked hard to manage our disappointment and we left, with 3 days returned, so thank you very much for this. She was understanding and very extremely helpful. After no sleep and our experience ‘noted’, all attentive at others check in.

Fantastic location.

Fantastic location. Beautiful views. Lovely pool with water from spa and beautiful views. Quiet restful place in decent walking distance to everything. Super friendly staff. Lovely meals across the road. Huge room with open balcony. Can sleep with doors open. Heaps of fresh air and clear skies for star gazing.

I'm not sure about price, as I was given as a present.

Great views from the room balconies. Simple yet comfortable rooms. Friendly reception staff.

small balcony, No proper pillows, only cushions with stains on the covers to rest head when sleeping. We requested a double-bed through Booking.com but only got a twin room. we were also not notified that the pool had been hired out for a children's party and were forced to retreat to our room, not ideal as we had booked the placed based on the fact it had a pool that we could sit and relax by for the time there.

Free parking.

Free parking. Value for your money. Easy access. The owners are very kind and helpful. The breakfast is delicious and good although no one could expect breakfast like a big hotel with the money paid for the room. As a whole the place is a good choice for one night stay as was ours.

It seemed like while the hotel was once built with much thought and love somehow become a burden to the owners. The place needs a renovation and better management.

Very enjoyable

The views were beautiful. The bedrooms are spacious and very clean. The hotel restaurant made the most delicious chicken piri piri. And the staff were extremely friendly and helpful . The pool area was magnificent We would recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Monchique

WiFi not very good and the TV screens very small. But we didn’t need to or want to watch any TV so it didn’t matter

The hotel appears not to be in a fit state to receive visitors - especially unsuitable for children.

The location, with a view to the coast, was the only good thing about the hotel. Everything else was in a poor state. There were several For Sale signs on display. -The room we reserved (and paid extra for) was not available on the day we arrived, so we spent the night in a room strangely furnished only with a refrigerator/deep freeze unit. We then moved to the suite reserved, which had sheets too small for the bed, and nothing like the appearance and furniture advertised in photographs on the website. The restaurant, advertised as open, had a large notice on the door announcing that it was closed. It remained closed, and the bar had no stock though we decided not to attempt to use it. The photographs on the Booking.com website give a grossly misleading impression of the hotel's present state of disrepair.

Breakfast in the restaurant (advertised on the door as CLOSED!) was very poor - and during the day we could see through the window that most of the breakfast was left exposed from day to day, which could explain why bread at breakfast was stale. We noticed that the manager and his friends taking their breakfast were serving themselves with fresh coffee, whereas we had weak coffee from a vacuum jug. When my wife asked for fresh coffee, the manager replied that she would not like it because it was too strong. Understandably the swimming pool was not in use in April, but the pool itself, and the external areas of the hotel, were untidy and decrepit. The massive stainless steel hot water tank standing exposed on the roof had clearly been severely damaged - patched repairs were leaking jets of hot water, and there was exposed and apparently uninsulated wiring. We were warned that it might take several minutes for hot water to reach bedrooms.
